Everett Crane Move

The Project:

Foss Maritime transported two gantry cranes from the Port of Los Angeles to the Port of Everett, for use at the Port’s South Terminal. Each crane weighed 2.4 million pounds and measured 360 feet long by 120 feet wide. The powerful ocean tug Michele Foss towed the giant cranes aboard a Foss barge on the two-week, 1,177 nautical-mile journey.

Highlights:

The South Terminal Modernization project will ensure the Port’s facilities are ready to support the next generation of over-dimensional cargo, including aerospace parts for the new Boeing 777X.
The Michele Foss encountered 60 mph winds and 12-foot waves north of San Francisco and safely backtracked during the journey to avoid the swells.
The new cranes are part of a $57 million upgrade underway to the Everett, WA waterfront.

First U.S. Flagged LNG Bunker Barge

The Project:

Foss Maritime has been deeply involved in the design and construction of the first U.S. flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge, the Clean Jacksonville. Foss provided project management and bunkering operations, as well as subject matter expertise and formed an LNG operations team who will operate the barge in support of Tote Maritime Puerto Rico’s, LNG-Powered, Marlin Class Vessels.

Highlights:

The Clean Jacksonville has a towing speed of up to 8 knots and a storage capacity of 2,200 m3, with atmospheric membrane tanks that conform to the hull shape to maximize use of space.
The barge uses the latest leak detection technology and emergency shutdown systems to meet strict regulatory requirements.
LNG vessels have made more than 105,000 LNG carrier voyages without major accidents or safety problems, either in port or at sea.
Foss worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to develop a recruitment process to define areas of expertise required for crew positions.
Foss provided detailed risk assessments, HAZID/HAZOPS, Waterway Suitability Studies, contingency plans and emergency response plans.

Foss Assists in Hurricane Recovery

The Project:

Working with a coalition of U.S. electric companies, and in coordination with first responders, Foss supported recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Foss delivered up to 600 utility trucks to assist in restoring power, housed first responders in three accommodation vessels or “floating hotels”, and produced and distributed thousands of meals to island residents.

Highlights:

Foss supported 729 first responders, including workers from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and AmeriCorps.
“Floating hotels” housed hundreds of workers, and included homemade meals, sleeping quarters, and a home-base after long shifts.
The ocean-going tugs Lauren Foss and Corbin Foss stood alongside the accommodation vessels to provide additional support.
Foss delivered bucket trucks, line trucks, pickups, aerial lifts, CAT skid-steer loaders, digger derricks, and pull trailers, and also three barge loads of water.

Foss Completes Multi-year Sakhalin Sealift

The Project:

During the 2016 and 2017 ice-free seasons, Foss completed a major sealift to an oilfield development project on remote Sakhalin Island off the coast of eastern Russia – including delivery of the largest land-based drill rig in the world. Traveling more than 240,000 nautical miles, the project included multiple tows from Texas and South Korea. Fifteen barges, 15 ocean-going tugs, and six shallow-draft tugs safely and successfully delivered 39 modules weighing as much as 2,600 tons.

Highlights:

Land-based drill rig deconstructs into 14 modules for transportation from Brownsville, Texas, to Sakhalin Island, requiring five tug and barge sets.
Delivered 10 piperacks and 15 processing modules from Ulsan, South Korea.
Provided bathymetric surveying and placed navigation buoys and mooring anchors to account for ice coverage and changing navigable channels.
On-site teams provided engineering and naval architecture solutions, ballasting, stevedores, and local interface in Brownsville, Ulsan and Odoptu.
A dedicated project management team assisted in permitting and local compliance and managed local labor.

Sealift to Alaskan North Slope

The Project:

The Arctic Class Tug Denise Foss transported the drilling rig, Innovation, from Vancouver, WA, to Point Oliktok on the North Slope of Alaska. Traversing through challenging conditions, the vessel crews regularly consulted ice flight reconnaissance pilots and reviewed satellite weather data during the 2,300 nautical mile voyage. The crew successfully delivered the rig on time, and during the ice-free window for safe offloading conditions. Foss provided turnkey, port-to-port services, from loadout to offloading of the rig modules.

Highlights:

The sealift of the Innovation was segmented into five phases that included developing technical procedures and planning load out in Vancouver, towing to the North Slope, offload at Oliktok and demobilization and restoration of equipment.
Foss developed detailed technical plans for all stages, including: mooring, ballast and stow, stability assessments, and more.
The rig consists of a 500 kip telescoping mast, ‘box on box’ substructure, dual moving system, and 21 individual modules. In total, the structural weight is near 1.5 million pounds.

Navy Radar Vessel Assists

The Project:

Foss Maritime, working in conjunction with federal agencies, assisted in the complex escort and docking of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency’s Sea-Based X-Band Radar or SBX-1. Through careful planning, Foss tugs guided the vessel in Hawaii as it moved to open water, then later met the SBX-1 about 50 miles outside the Strait of Juan de Fuca and carefully escorted the valuable vessel to Port Angeles, WA, and through Elliott Bay to Vigor’s Seattle shipyard, where the SBX-1 would undergo maintenance and upgrades.

Highlights:

The SBX-1 is made for high winds and heavy seas. It is 389 feet long, has a maximum beam of 276 feet, and a height of about 250 feet.
In planning the logistics, Foss Operations Manager and a Foss Captain rode with a Marine Pilot taking the SBX-1 to sea to observe the vessel’s handling characteristics.
Foss tugs assisting in the move included the Pi’ilani and Mikioi in Hawaii, and the Lindsey Foss, Pacific Star, Henry Foss, and Wedell Foss in the Puget Sound.
The entire transit was executed without incident and took 27 hours at 6 knots.
The escort and docking of the SBX-1 was performed under security restrictions as stringent as those for Air Force One.

Delivery of Nations Largest Floating Dock

The Project:

Foss Maritime brought a semi-submersible ship carrying the nation’s largest floating drydock, the Vigorous, up the Willamette River to Vigor Industrial’s Portland, Oregon shipyard. Two Foss tugs, the Pacific Escort and the Tiger 9, now named the Kalama, assisted one of the world’s largest heavy-lift ships, the Blue Marlin, and its oversized drydock cargo safely upriver and on schedule. Foss also participated in the removal and placement of the drydock with the use of two barges.

Highlights:

The Vigorous drydock is 960 feet long when fully assembled
The massive drydock weighs 24,000 LT, with a lifting capacity of 80,000 LT
The drydock was built at China’s ZPMC Qidong shipyard, beginning in early 2013 and delivered to Vigor in late 2014
Foss assisted in the positioning of the first vessel to be drydocked on the Vigorous, the SS Algol – a massive 936 foot long cargo ship designed to ferry up to 700 army vehicles, including tanks, trucks and helicopters

Foss Transports World’s Largest Railcar Barge

The Project:

Since 1993, Foss has safely guided the world’s largest railcar barge, the Aquatrain, for the Canadian National Railroad (CNR) between Prince Rupert, B.C., to Whittier, Alaska. Foss tugs, the Justine Foss and the Barbara Foss, tow the 100 by 400 foot barge on a 12-day cycle, 30 times a year, where it links with the Alaska Railroad for daily service to Anchorage and Fairbanks. The route is the shortest water route to Alaska by 600 miles, compared to southern ports. The CNR has offered this year-round service since 1962, with Foss assuming operations in 1993 with the purchase of Portland-based Brix Maritime.

Highlights:

Both the 116-foot long Justine Foss and Barbara Foss are rated at 4,300 horsepower.
The barge is 400’ by 100’ with a capacity of 45 rail cars.
The Aquatrain barge was built in 1982 by Shin-A shipbuilding in South Korea and is the world’s largest railcar barge.
Railcars can travel intact from origin to destination on one bill of lading.
The service has operated for more than 50 years.

One Thousandth Boeing Barge load Delivered

The Project:

Foss Maritime has worked with The Boeing Company of Everett, Washington for more than 20 years on a variety of projects. In 2011, Foss delivered the 1,000th barge load of containerized aircraft parts to the Port of Everett for Boeing. The aircraft parts arrive in the ports of Tacoma and Seattle where they are then barged by Foss to Pacific Terminal in Everett and placed on rail cars for transport to Boeing’s Everett plant. Foss continues this service today, transporting approximately 100 barge loads a year.

Tugs, such as the Andrew Foss, assist in moving the barge though the Puget Sound.

Historic Final Voyage

The Project:

In 2014, Foss escorted the USS Constellation aircraft carrier on her historic final voyage. The Kitty Hawk-class supercarrier, nicknamed “Connie” by her crew, was successfully towed by ocean tug Corbin Foss from Bremerton Naval Shipyard to Brownsville, Texas to be retired and scrapped. The 16,000-mile journey took 160 days, with Foss guiding the massive vessel along Mexico and Central and South America, passing through the Straits of Magellan before heading north to Texas.

Worked in a collaborative effort with a second tug company that assisted during the Pacific, South American portion of the tow
